Marine Solutions - Custom Vessel Connection Pillar
Finding a reliable, durable, secure solution for marine electrics in marine environments is paramount. That is where we (KES) come in. We recently had a client come to us with an issue. They were looking for a custom solution for their electrics at the marina. So we said, “You want a custom-designed vessel connection pillar that meets stringent specifications for durability, protection, and functionality. Yeah, we can do that!”
Project Overview
The outer enclosure of the vessel connection pillar is constructed from 2.0mm 316-grade stainless steel, providing exceptional corrosion resistance. To provide additional protection against the harsh elements at the marina, we also added a dark, admiralty grey polyester powder coating. This ensures the pillar is not only resilient but also maintains its aesthetic appeal in the face of challenging conditions. Each frame is designed to meet IP55 standards, making it dust-tight and safeguarded against water jets from all directions.
Features
-
Door Stays: Incorporating door stays ensures that the enclosure door(s) stay securely open when necessary, allowing for convenient access during maintenance or inspections.
-
Bottom Entry Brush Strip: A bottom entry brush strip is strategically included to maintain a dust and water-tight seal around incoming cables, preventing any potential ingress of foreign particles.
-
Rain Canopy: A critical addition, the rain canopy provides an extra layer of protection, safeguarding the pillar from the elements and minimising water ingress.
Security
To enhance security, the rear doors of the pillar are fitted with security nuts to reinforce the pillar's integrity.
Each custom connection pillar has a brush strip entry that is designed with a sliding cover plate, allowing cables to enter the pillar while maintaining a sealed environment when not in use. This feature was built to strike a balance between accessibility and protection.
Electrical Components
The custom connection pillar serves as a vital hub for essential electrical components, including a 1250A Triple Pole MCCB, power connectors, and various indicators, all housed within a robust and weather-resistant enclosure.
Copper Connection Bars
The vessel connection pillar has four 300mm copper connection bars per phase and two 300mm earth conductors, with no requirement for a neutral conductor. This ensures efficient and reliable electrical connections.
Gland Plate
A non-ferrous pre-punched gland plate is added to provide a secure and sealed entry point for single-core cables without generating any eddy currents. All of our bespoke marine industry solutions consider the potential of electromagnetic interference.
MCCB
The heart of the pillar's electrical system is a 1250A Triple Pole NS1250 MCCB with Micrologic 2 protection, preset at 1100A. This MCCB serves as a vital circuit breaker, ensuring the safety of the electrical supply on board.
Shore Power Supply Indicators
To facilitate real-time monitoring, three "Shore Power Supply" indicators with viewing windows are integrated. This allows for a quick assessment of the power source's status.
Multifunction Meter
The vessel connection pillar features an IP-rated multifunction meter with associated CTs, equipped with a viewing window. This enables real-time monitoring of electrical parameters, providing data for operational decision-making.
Emergency Button
An internal emergency (twist to reset) button, with a hinged cover, is also provided. It operates via an undervolt release within the MCCB and door interlocking switch. The emergency button offers a swift means of disconnecting power in emergencies—a crucial safety feature.
Power Connectors
Outgoing power is facilitated by three sets of 800A Powerlock Source Connectors (L1, L2, L3) without a neutral, as well as one 800A Powerlock Source Earth Connector. This ensures reliable power distribution.
Internal Lighting and Heating
To enhance visibility and prevent moisture buildup within the enclosure, the cabinet is equipped with an internal LED light with door switch operation and two anti-condensation heaters with thermostats. These features contribute to the longevity and optimal performance of the electrical components.
This custom vessel connection pillar detailed in this case study exemplifies a robust, weather-resistant, secure solution for marine electrical connections. With its durable stainless steel construction, IP55 protection, advanced electrical components, and meticulous attention to safety and security features, this vessel connection pillar is well-prepared to withstand the demanding conditions of marine environments while ensuring reliable power distribution.
This case study serves as an example of how our engineers and design team consider all variables to create high-quality, functional and reliable marine solutions for the marine industry. Meeting the specific requirements of the client and ensuring the safety and efficiency of electrical operations on board a vessel.
